One time, my friend was up for a promotion, and it was going to be a salaried position. They did the math on the hours they worked now, and what the salary would work out to be. They were getting a pay cut with that promotion. So do the math, and do what you can to make sure it's a decent company.
Yes thats the real challenge. Being paid just enough to survive is very tough reality to accept
It all depends on the company. I have worked previously for companies that turn the salaried worker into whenever we need you to be a team player and worked more hours than were initially told. I currently work for a company that is very good at not wanting to take advantage of workers, including salaried workers. They leave it up to you, if you need to work longer to get the job done that's what you do but if you need or want to leave after your 8 hours, you can. They just want the job done. They also give yearly raises even to the salaried workers.
