ATS systems are uniformly terrible. At a previous gig I forced HR to send me all submitted resumes (a lot!), and hired almost entirely from the rejection pile.
That doesn't mean HR will stop using it, of course, because they are lazy. And most recruiters are so completely unqualified to screen candidates that I have no idea how they still have jobs themselves.
ATS (workday?) is getting class action sued I believe for being discriminatory. Of course this is also due to companies setting discriminatory filters but the fact that these systems offer it and make it easy to do so means they share the blame. ATS is probably the worst thing to happen to recruiting ever, barring the new AI recruiters popping up.
VP CD1, as I thought. And agree about HR and recruiters.
I think any recruiter SHOULD have worked in the exact role they are helping to hire for, otherwise how do they really understand what to look for and not just get swayed by the surface-level generic and obvious.
Likewise, how is HR in ANY position to understand what specific roles need and judge intelligently. There’s no way.
Hiring managers directly involved in the day to day work, overseeing it and working with the team and the role being hired—these are the true assessors of a great match. And even then, sometimes there can be mismatches…
So how is the amalgam of ATS, HR and recruiters supposed to put the “best” options in front of the hiring manager and team?
I’m surprised hiring teams aren’t pushing back. After all, they’ll have to work with that new hire.
