Cross posting this but could use the female perspective — Got a really substantial (~40%) mid year raise after I brought in a basically unsolicited competing offer from one of our peers. My firm typically only adjusts salary on an annual basis in March, and I’m pretty worried I’ll see a smaller than normal annual raise this spring to “make up for” my out of sequence mid year raise. Any advice on advocating for myself to ensure that doesn’t happen?

I got my year end review and need “another 6 months of consistency” to get promoted. I know my bonus is lower than the median for my pay band. Should I ask for a pay raise / larger bonus or just wait for promotion in 6 months so I don’t rock the boat?

I know I am hella late to the party BUT I am a first year associate at a V20 firm and am ridiculously curious about when bonuses drop. Anyone know? And by bonus I do not mean an iPad. I will chuck that right back. Just another excuse to have a “flexible work environment.” No ma’am. Not in 2021. We not playing no games anymore.

Current base is ~$100k, bonus was ~$10k last year. Incoming industry offer ~$125k, bonus should be ~$25k. Do I still try to negotiate a sign-on bonus to make up for what I lose in unvested comp?

Your yearly reminder that if you’d bought the DJIA in 1929 you didn’t become profitable in real terms until 1955. It wasn’t just WW2. If you’d bought the DJIA at the beginning of 1966 you lost almost 75% to inflation over two decades and didn’t recover in real terms until 1995. You’d have made nothing between JFK’s death and Clinton’s second term. We are in a particularly weird period of “stonks only go up” but remember those 8% returns over the long run mask generation-defining risks.
