How do you respond when companies you interview with ask what your current salary range is?

Asking for two of my friends. Age around 22. 1 has done B.Sc in Nursing. And the other has done B.Sc in Agriculture. Both have become hopeless into their respective fields after looking for job and not being able to fetch any better. They want to switch to IT. My question is can they do this if acquired sufficient skills! I mean irrespective of their background, will a company hire them as a intern or fresher? If it's possible, then kindly suggest. I can’t help but feel stuck in my career. I’m a licensed attorney in another country, but been working as a law clerk in a firm for about a year now. I was hoping to take the NY bar in February but the foreign law graduate restrictions won’t allow. Now, I have to wait till July! Currently SM in Deloitte leading data engineering and ML teams for commercial clients. Looking for exit ops to Amazon/ FAANGS and other cloud compnies. What type of roles i should target. I am comfortable with Program Management or client focussed delivery roles. I have been in architect roles but not doing hands on tech work for last couple of years as i manage large teams doing that. Since these companies are product heavy what type of role that Big4 SM generally transition to ,in these orgs.
