I would definitely recommend you move into an apartment building. Can make it easier to make friends and meet people. Some of the people I met at my apartment have become amazing friends.
Great more people coming here. This is why some of us can't find jobs here
Ymmv, but I’ve found Houston to be very welcoming to outsiders. The city is transient, so you don’t deal with many townies. There are a lot of opportunities to get out and meet other late 20s / early 30s if you get involved with groups. My wife and I have been able to make a large group of friends within the 2+ years we’ve lived here—did not really know anyone when we arrived.
Groups: alumni groups for your university, interests personal interests like the Astros or charity, professional organizations related to your career/industry like young lawyers, etc.
Just takes time, but can absolutely happen in Houston (or any large city)
Houston is a big city, with lots of transplants. There really isn’t a “you’re not from here” vibe at all. There’s tons to do so you should be able to find your people as long as you get out and get involved in something.
Definitely consider/research the different areas of town before finalizing on where you’ll live. Some are much quieter and may leave you with a nasty commute, or on the opposite side of town from where your chosen activities/haunts are.
Man it's booming out here and driving up the prices to stupid levels. What's your income going to look like? Texas is quickly becoming the new California just it terms of cost of living and advantage that used to exist living here is now gone.
You’re missing the point S1. The point is that Houston is wildly affordable compared to other cities, but especially when compared to Californian cities. Yes, we are blessed because we make good money, but more so because 15 years ago, I serendipitously landed in Houston and it was a financial gift from above. You could not possibly live a life as rich as we do in another cosmopolitan city in the US for as little $ as we do here. I hardly think myself detached from reality, considering I grew up in a poor country, to poor parents, and came to the US at 28 years of age with less than $10k to my name. Houston has allowed me and my family to likely retire at 50, without having to sacrifice that much…
Houston isn’t part of the seventh circle of hell, but you can see it from my office. It is a miserable “city” surpassed only by the “golden triangle of Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange. My job is great. But it is an oppressive ugly place to live. Run!
I love Houston. I’ve lived in several cities and have found Houston the most open and welcoming. Food scene is amazing, museums, ballet, theater, symphony are top notch. Lots of outdoor activities as well. (Full disclosure it does get HOT ☄️ in the summer.) I consider moving here (also for a job) one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Houston is awesome! Just don’t California our Texas! Signed former Californian 😂
Hospitality here is pretty great. I wouldn't be surprised if you more than a few people in a few months here. Moved from the north east and acclimated pretty quickly
Yes it’s awesome here. Food scene is amazing, bar scene is great at all levels, breweries all over, music scene, weather is nice most of the year minus a few months, neighborhoods can be hit or miss though. What area is your job located? Commutes can be crummy depending on where you need to go, but a lot of people do it to live in a more desirable spot and it’s understood. As a young professional the networking is great and if you can get yourself in a cool neighborhood, the sky is the limit on activities. Lots of art, cycling, running, etc clubs and everyone is pretty outgoing. I moved out here in 2014 after school and haven’t left even though I almost moved to Colorado once but pulled the plug last minute and decided I liked it here more. If you tell me where you’re working and a few of your hobbies I can give you a few cool/reasonable neighborhoods to look at renting an appt or even finding roommates/ small house. There are a lot of appts being built and i think there might be some good deals they’re offering to fill them up. Check out HAR.com and you can see rentals to get a better feel than just appt websites.
Yes
Dec will be 10 years now for me. Moved in my early 30’s. Love it here. Agreed with the others, very welcoming city. I’ve also met no more than 15 born and raised Houstonians. lol. There’s always something to do and you’d be guaranteed to meet someone everytime. You can always download meetup app and see the activities to get a sense for stuff to do here for those in your age range as well!
For now
In my mid 20s and I love it here. I’m biased because I’m from here, but I left for 6 years for my education and found myself desperate to come back during covid. You’ll love it
There are good areas for your age range where you can meet friendly people. I also just moved in to the city and joined different groups in my area and am meeting people so frequently. People are nice and welcoming and since a lot of people move here from other states, they are empathetic to being new. Feel free to message me if you need any recommendations!
I used Facebook and bumble bff. The group/s related to things i liked to do(brunch, read, etc)
Houston is the BOMB DIGGITY. Great nightlife for the youngins in their 20s/30s. Great food scene, pro sports teams, performing arts, festivals. Do it!!!
if you're in your late 20s and like the heat you will thrive here
it depends, if you dont mind driving for everything you will be fine
Houston native here - this place sucks and is getting more ghetto by the second. If you want a lower cost of living and the feel of a big city here you go. Focus on making money and find who and what you want to do in life lol
As a Houston native..... please go find somehere else to live. 😂 you'll hate the humidity and lack of scenery.
