We are overly addicted to cars.
A5; it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The more cars, the more highways and parking lots are needed. The more cars, the less incentive there is to be upwards rather than outwards. All of this creates an environment where cars create their own need by expanding land use, making pedestrian-friendly communities difficult.
It’s extremely expensive to own a car, costing thousands in ownership, gas, insurance, maintenance, etc., making it difficult for the poor in our city to find transport. They want a new job? They are stuck with those in their area. Want to go to the grocery store rather than buy the junk food at the gas station? It’ll take you hours.
Not to mention the air pollution, traffic deaths, GHG emissions, wasted time in traffic, many billions of dollars spent on roads, etc.
As to your question: it is tough for an individual to make this type of change—policy choices ultimately need to be made by governments. We need rail lines and buses, we need walkable neighborhoods like the Heights, etc.
For everyone claiming there’s “nothing to do”, I recommend searching on Eventbrite…download the app, Meetup app, CultureMap website, PaperCity Mag website (if you’re really bougie and appreciate the finer things) and click through Visit Houston tourist website. I discovered these sites years ago when I was bored and looking to find new and interesting events.

M1, I’ve lived in Houston most of my life and there’s an "outdoor season”. It’s typically between the months of Oct to mid May. Anytime later on and your daytime outdoor activities schedule must change or you’ll risk heat exhaustion, Amazon style mosquitoes, Jurassic T-rex 🦖 wasps and general malaise of extreme heat/humidity. I remember a local meteorologist said Spring/ summer schedule is leave out before 11am (which is pushing it) or after 7pm.
Here's mine: Kirby Ice House kinda sucks and feels more like a networking event than a bar
This hurts my heart cuz it’s my favorite bar but honestly you might be on to something.
It’s actually a great place to live.
Pro
Just bought a 3 bed / 3 bath place that’s 3 years old in East River for $440k. 10 minutes tops to downtown. Walkable to Eado and St Arnold’s. Can still be done!
Krispy Kreme is better than shipleys
Bleck! Both are disgusting. Southern Maid all the way
The heights is an overrated and trendy part of town where houses costs $300k more than they would anywhere else, save maybe West U.
Ahhh makes sense! Congratulations on your collective success!!! I’d definitely choose location over a new build 45 minutes away if I could afford it.
For now, I continue renting in the loop.
Whataburger > In-N-Out
Me and my family got sick from eating at Whataburger and haven’t gone back ever since.
There’s nothing to do
I tell all visitors we have everything you would ever want to do but don’t ask me what to do because I cannot suggest anything
Whataburger is trash
Pro
So, my point here M&C1 is that it doesn't even have a comparison to the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit. Even if the two chains were neck and neck (which they're not), that would be the tie-breaker.
Blue Bell is mediocre ice cream.
Such blasphemy!! 😂
The Galleria is the new Gunspoint with more expensive shops
Dating pool is awful compared to other cities
Thanks EY1 maybe I’ll check it out!
One more: Torchy's Tacos is mediocre and overpriced. No idea why people wait in line for this, maybe it was better a decade ago?
I think the initial allure was that it was cheap and a better taco than most restaurants, now it’s expensive and there’s more competition out there
El Tiempo is overpriced trash.
Pro
Candente is outstanding
Too many trendy/instagrammy restaurants that charge insane prices for ambiance & presentation of mediocre food. I could give af about a glittery cocktail or table-side preparation of guac - just make good food, price accordingly, and let that speak for itself.
This is a perfect description of Present Company, in Montrose
The roads are shit.
Not too controversial.
Pro
The pizza at Franks pizza is overrated. Not bad, but there are better pizzas that give more sauce and more cheese on their pies.
More sauce is not necessarily a good thing.
El Tiempo is meh. Don't @ me.
This is a correct take
Most parts of the city are rather ugly. Maybe it’s because I recently spent time in Istanbul, Shanghai, and Lyon, but gazing at the “scenery” in our city (even at sunset and the blue hour) left a lot to be desired.
I can show you the trophy if you want?
Houston is a very segregated city full of racist and ignorant people. I know people will disagree with me saying that Houston is very "diverse", which is irrelevant.
I hang out inside the loop and Chinatown. In those respects, it's diverse.
Lucille's is hella overrated
