I came back to public from industry. I love the variety of work I have in PA. I also feel more respected in PA. In industry, I was looked at as a cost (necessary evil). In PA I am looked at as a revenue generator which is a much better vibe.
I had a manager that did this, they left for industry as a senior then came back to public as a manager a few years later (different firm) because they were bored of seeing the same things and wanted more variety/challenge
Rising Star
I’m good. If I can avoid public I will at all costs.
I did this, though tried out a more specialized group in public accounting when I boomeranged back. I didn't end up liking the work and it helped me remember how much I hated charge hours, billing, and revenue goals, so I went back to industry a year later.
I did it. The work I did in industry was so niche, once my salary was topped out, I literally could not make any other kind of move without taking a pay cut.
I am working much harder than I did in industry, I have to deal with all the nonsense of accurate billing and utilization, etc. However, my salary now, two years later, is almost 20,000 higher than it would have been at my old job. Also, I am learning skills and gaining experience that will allow me to go back into industry in a much better position and pay than when I left.
Long enough to get a job with less hours and better pay. I’m guessing another year I’ll be able to start looking.
I did this. I think it actually makes me better than the people who spent their career in public. I can tell clients I know what they are going through from when I was in their shoes.
How long did you stay in industry? And what made you come back?
I had a manager at KPMG who did this.
Pro
The only area I ever considered was CAS, not audit or tax.
I did as an associate went to industry and I came back to public and kinda started all over I’m a manager now, best decision ever.
I did
I’m kind of in an in-between place where I’m still doing some form of public accounting with an inside view of industry clients. Getting to see it this way, I have no desire to go into industry at this point. But I’m not going back to audit either. TBD what’s next but enjoying the in-between in the meantime. I feel like professional services is my jam.
I left public for industry and made it 2 years before I came back. I was so bored and didn’t really feel as interested in the work. Best decision I ever made to come back.
Nope never ever ever
