More details are needed in order to provide an answer. What's your budget for rent? What kind of place are you looking for? A basic apartment or one with amenities? Which area/neighbourhood do you want to live in? Downtown?
The big "moving day" in Quebec every year is on July 1st, so there is more availability then. So September/October doesn't matter, but you'll probably have a better chance finding something for September. Give yourself at least 2 months to find something. It may take only a month, depending on what you're looking for and your specific criteria.
I will be working at Place Bonaventure and am looking for a place within 45 minutes transit of then since I don't have a car. I was thinking maybe Verdun but not completely sure yet since I don't know the neighborhoods. My budget is up to $1800 including utilities or $1550 -$1600 without for a 1 or 2 bedroom.
That's gare centrale -- so pretty much right in the middle of downtown near PVM (place ville marie). Are the prices you stated in $ CAD or $ USD? I think you can still find a 1 bedroom close to it for around $1800 CAD (with all utilities included except for internet). What are you looking for in a neighbourhood exactly? Verdun is chill and seems to have a bit of a good community feel, but it's bit farther and is more like a suburb (no condos). I'd suggest staying closer to the downtown area between Chinatown and Concordia university (and including Griffintown).
I recommend October or later. Given that so many students are seeking rentals for the beginning of their semester in September, there is a extremely high demand then. Otherwise, Quebec residents have the habit to move on July 1st, making Canada day a moving day.
