Is it industry standard to be a jerk or is it just this firm? Me and the other analysts are absolutely treated like garbage here and it's wearing me down.

Which firm do you work for?

It really depends. At a MM bank and given the small size of the team, people are pretty selective about not hiring douchebags

Which one would you pick?

Big name shop. Shitty account, but you get opportunities beyond that.

Shop with bad reputation that lacks PR and hardly enters awards but has a lot of book-worthy projects.

How do you guys handle working with a staff accountant who just completely ignores you when you delegate work down to them, and who gives you an attitude all the time? If I send an email, I also have to follow up with her on teams multiple times, and hope after a few hours she actually does what she says she will do. I moved from public to industry recently, and I’ve always had great staff that wanted to do well and have never experienced working with someone who just doesn’t want to do the job.

Got laid off in tech corp dev making 250-300 all in. Have an offer to join a fairly new family office investment team in PE buyouts but will be a fairly significant cash pay cut vs what I was making in tech corp dev. I’ve always been interested in doing investing. All things being equal, is there better upside to take the fam office to do PE (at a pay cut for now), or go do another corp dev job? 6-7 YOE

Nyc based. Is it at all possible to make at least 200 base in corp dev or strategy at a tech company? Super burned out but don’t want to take a paycut in base. I realize I’ll never make all in comp the same in tech but if I can match base I’d be content.

Looking for advice: I have an analyst (9 months on the job) who still doesn’t get it - repeatedly misses comments, doesn’t follow instructions, slow, etc. I have raised this to both my MDs and they seem to be adopting a “not my problem” approach when I mention it. I had advised against hiring this analyst post internship and my MD insisted that all the issues I highlighted were fixable. I have tried teaching him to no avail and frustration with him is growing. Any suggestions for how to handle?

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.

Weighing whether another year of IB experience would be helpful, or would just make me one year older at the same starting point in PE.
I’m 1.5 years out of college as an analyst at a middle market bank within the healthcare M&A group. Getting worked a lot but starting to operate as an associate on deals. Debating accepting an offer for a newer, lower-MM healthcare and growth focused PE firm. I know I want to go to PE at some point, but what are some thoughts on when you should go?

Closing in on a corp dev offer. I work at a boutique (~10 ppl) where the analysts/associates carry a lot of weight during deals. I’m four months into my job and I got put onto a PIP. I worked so hard to break into IB, put up all the hours and even working 2am nights for weeks, learned a ton, and improved a lot along the way as the sole analyst yet this happens. I’m extra worried because it doesn’t seem there’s IB analyst positions out there. Im really hoping come January more positions come up but I’m just praying they don’t fire me until then. Anyone have general tips for this situation?
