If you want to go to PE, the extra year doing IB will not benefit you more than an extra year doing PE. Sooner you get PE experience, the better for actually doing PE.
Other things youll want to consider though: The actual decision to stay in IB vs go to PE (staying in IB looking increasingly more lucrative / sustainable these days, dependent obv on firm & group), the choice of PE firm you go to (is it a sweatshop? Is LMM where you want to focus?), your long term career goals (are you staying in this next shop till partner? Is this place best suited for that, ie. track record of growth & returns, room at the top, good culture & team?)
I’m 25, most of my friends who’ve left banking for the buyside regret it. They’ve essentially taken $100k+ pay cuts, to work similar hours. Not all, but most. Stay in banking another year. I left banking after 2 years, and regret it. These pay bumps are enticing.
What were their reasons for leaving?
