I’m four months into my job and I got put onto a PIP. I worked so hard to break into IB, put up all the hours and even working 2am nights for weeks, learned a ton, and improved a lot along the way as the sole analyst yet this happens. I’m extra worried because it doesn’t seem there’s IB analyst positions out there. Im really hoping come January more positions come up but I’m just praying they don’t fire me until then. Anyone have general tips for this situation?

Usually the PIP will provide you certain amount of time to make improvements, usually 30 days. New positions will open up. Did they give you a verbal warning before? Did they provide you a clear list of items to improve on?

For me it’s 45 days. They verbally told me how to improve but they Said a PDF will come soon, which it has not yet. I’m just planning for now to schedule weekly meetings on my performance with my associate and will also possibly do daily check ins with my HR person on how I’m doing to be extra prudent to show I’m proactive with this

Start recruiting immediately. They are probably trying to find someone to replace you, but you have some leverage if you are the only analyst there. As soon as they find someone new you will be out though, so important that you move ahead of this.

Technically illegal for them to hire while he is under PIP.

Sorry to say but junior bankers got put into PIP for a reason - typically it’s around error / unable to run excel.

My advice would be to solicit feedback on what they don’t like and show improvements on those areas.

We def are pass the times where we’re like ok you work til 2 then you good - some of the best analysts have great lifestyle - it’s more on quality of work.

This is so true

My group’s hiring associates and A2/3s, not sure if you’re an analyst or an associate based on your post, but happy to chat if you’re beyond the first analyst year (not able to help if you’re in the first year of being an analyst unfortunately). I’m at a MM IB for reference

Performance improvement plan. It’s a corporate “plan” for you to improve but it’s really a way for the firm to coach you out

That’s the attitude :)

What is PIP?

Big yikes. I have never heard of it

That’s tough. Op, were you on good terms with your associate? If i was the associate I would rather continue to coach you if you are coachable than go bring someone new. There is no guarantee that new person will do a better job.

This associate is the reason why I’m on the pip. I’m on better relations with a junior associate but they’re moving to another group within the bank (reasonably so). I find this associate to be such a bad mentor and coach

Is this Goldman Sachs

No an MMIB

Got a Bb offer and team is open to me joining either as a senior analyst or junior associate. With 2 yrs of ft exp and lengthy internships before that, I feel like I'm ready for the associate role. However, team head wanted to make sure that I don't underestimate the step-up it'll require on my end and that it'll be very intense. Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance!
