No way I am taking a demotion with less pay.
lol no. You are in accounting, not joining as a swe, product, or strategy teams. There is no prestige in working in their back office. When people talk about working at FAANG, they’re not talking about being a bean counter.
One benefit. Most people outside of accounting have heard of Amazon.
Amazon is famous for its toxic environment (mostly software engineers)
also are you ready to return to our office five days a week?
I took the risk of going from Manager at a mid size firm to senior accountant at a mid sized M&D company. However, I did not take a pay cut.
From my very first interview, I let my now boss know that I don’t really care much for titles here at my company, but I do care about responsibilities and tasks.
Specifically, I let them know the department I’m most interested in, why my experience in audit would be instrumental in helping that department, and what responsibilities I envision taking from them in a year or so once I’m settled in.
The conversation with my boss will evolve over the months, but it’s at least in their mind that I do have ambitions beyond being a senior. My boss at least seemed amenable to my ideas, but did caveat that promotions aren’t as linear here as they are in public. That’s all fine by me as in the meantime, I’m enjoying a much healthier work life balance now that I’m out of public and actually have the time and mental capacity to exercise and eat healthier.
If you’re being utilized I wouldn’t risk going anywhere else in the current climate - especially for a demotion
It is definitely worth it to step down in some instances. Depends on what you want. The problem is you won't know if it is worth it until a couple years later.
I know a guy who went to Amazon(I think with a pay bump) and then ended up coming back to our team because the work life balance was better here. But my team is also pretty good at WLB.
