Mixed bag is the correct way of describing it. If you're thinking of going in house, it's definitely going to be slower come this time of year. For firms, it depends on your target location. If you're in a big city, firms are still hiring, but at ~70% efficiency compared to the summer months.
Several people believe that hiring picks up in the beginning of the year, and although that's generally true, a lot of the interviewing and offer acceptances occurs in the fall and they start in January.
