That sounds pretty grim. Perhaps the problem was that people attending a "networking lunch" would be a self-selected group of malcontents. Being around people like that may be unwise. It's good to be careful who you hang out with, as you might start picking up their habits.
I do criminal defense law and while there are complaints, for the most part, the day-to-day is very enjoyable. Lots of interesting stories, I’m not chained to a desk everyday, there’s a good variety between writing/research, investigation, oral advocacy, client communication, storytelling. The tough stuff is outweighed by deep sense of fulfillment (some may need to do prosecution work to get that; possibly depends on your politics). But in my experience, criminal lawyers are the group that least regrets going to law school.
The bad and suffering stories are the only interesting stories. Nobody is going to be entertained by a story about the sweet old lady that didn't complain and paid her bills. It may sound like thats all there is but they are just trying to entertain and have something relatable to talk about. I have endless stories of bad clients or terrible things happening, but I like my job and I like the day to day. The good stories easily outnumber the bad.
Trusts & Estates is pretty chill. At least on the transactional side.
It was, the planning side is much more mellow
I work for the government. Pay SUCKS but the work is great. All day long I crush my enemies, see them driven before me, etc. etc. Also I only work weekends if I want to.
