Is there any real path to big money in the federal government, or do you eventually have to jump ship for the private sector? I’m in a specialized field and I’m seeing private sector salaries double what I make. Is there any way to close the gap while staying in government?

Do Leidos, SAIC, and other mostly-fed consulting businesses pay bonuses to all levels? If so, what does a typical bonus target look like? Booz Allen does not pay bonuses until you get to the Senior Associate level (1 step below Director) and I think that impacts employee performance and work ethic pretty dramatically. I’m wondering if not paying bonuses is common to federal contracting because of how the contracts or priced, or if this is something unique to Booz Allen.
