Yup, for sure. INDOPACOM great for career.
I’m saying it’s a paycut because my salary goes up 1% and cost of living goes up 99.5%. Technically, you’re right. I should say “my dollar doesn’t go as far”
I just moved to Hawaii - went from Gg14 to Gs13 but making same amount. Hawaii is not as expensive as you think. Take the job and thank me later.
Coach
Do you work for Booz out in Hawaii or in the government?
Didn’t read past “was recently offered a job in Hawaii…” just take it
Point still stands, D2 is projecting and resorted to dumping on the fact somebody is in/works for the US Army instead of forming at least a half baked rebuttal to some ribbing.
Cost of living increase is just a fee you're paying to live in a super sick place. Sounds like a once in a lifetime experience, regardless of the career implications.
In all seriousness Huntsville is actually a reasonably decent place and close to some pretty cool stuff. Hawaii is essentially a different country in terms of climate, geography, etc.
It’s worth it. Your quality of life will go up with the weather and aloha spirit.
You’re definitely make good points, really appreciate if! You’re saying (or typing) a lot of the things I’m thinking
How long would you be there for? If it’s only a couple of years then I would really consider it. When else would you get to live in Hawaii for an extended amount of time?
Through FY 27
Absolutely! I would KILL to go to Hawaii. I don't think you will regret it one bit!! I say go for it.
You say this move with expedite you career. It sounds like this would be a temporary move. Even though your cost of living will increase, it is not forever. I would go for it. You could get a roommate to reduce the cost of housing. You probably will not spend a lot of time indoors with all the new sites to see and enjoying the weather. Money is great but it's not everything. In addition, this temporary living situation could earn you more money in the future. It will look great on your resume.
Minus one commenter, has anyone actually lived/worked in Hawaii before? Of course I welcomed the comments by posting here but I think there is misconceptions about going to Hawaii to vacation and going to Hawaii to work. I’m in a building with no windows, it’s not like my feet are in the sand. Just wanted to clarify
OP It’s true there are definitely downsides of living in Hawaii. At the end of the day it was a great experience but island fever is real and I’m not sure if I would move back at this point. On the other hand the experience was amazing and I’m so happy I had the opportunity to do it.
Are you doing this for a promotion or for the money? I think you should give it a shot and see what happens you can't talk about something that hasn't happened yet, and yes the cost of living in Hawaii is not the best but not everyone has the same experience so if you don't try it you will never know.

So, here’s the thing - if you’re a 13, it’s guaranteed that there are 8s, 9s, and 10s who work there and make a lot less than you’ll be making, and somehow they manage. Maybe there are things you spend on where you are now that you can eliminate when you move, and ways to cut back elsewhere.
It sounds like a good opportunity and the career growth should be worth a temporary hit to your buying power. Plus the weather is nice.
I get it. Hawaii has a very high cost of living. However it may career growth for you
Where do you live now that makes Hawaii a quality of life downgrade?
When I refer to quality of life I mean I can afford a nice house in CO in a prime location but would be spending double my mortgage to rent in a ran down 1 bed room apartment. In addition to having spending money to afford hobbies like skiing, mountain biking etc.
In a nut shell, the quality of living conditions I could afford would drop pretty significantly and lose disposable income for hobbies
