Believe me, when you've been unemployed for a few months you will look at big companies, start ups, contracts, freelance... whatever.
Just take something and plan to make a business out of it or further your career and get more education because of globalization they should have offered or told you to get an associate or something that way picked up another demographic for an area travel for the career to get more income i Dunno just my opinion I never went to college am trying to figure out things myself hyaa throat chop.
I wouldn't rule out looking at a startup. But it's always good to go in with a fair degree of skepticism. Not to step on anyone's dreams, but a lot of startups are companies focused on an idea that no one really needs. So that's the first test, of course, is this a company that should even exist? Having said that, if the money and work is good, it could be worth taking a position with the assumption it will be temporary but you might learn some things.
What startup companies are there ?
Wellfound.com has a bunch of them. Some are really past a "startup" but some are in the growth/early stages.
I'm seeing the same trends however I think its due to multitude of factors.
- Offshore labor is much much cheaper. The last 3 organizations I've worked at all had the bulk of their engineering headcount non US based (India, Philippines, Brazil). I only see this trend becoming more common as companies scale their teams while trying to reduce cost.
- Competition not only due to the market being flooded but also the skillset floor being raised. As an infrastructure engineer, it is no longer enough to be knowledgeable about a single Cloud provider but rather well versed in multi cloud + DC configurations. Even my software colleagues are finding themselves learning new technologies to make themselves more available for different projects,
Yes, fighting the offshore labor is insane. It happens at my company as well. Majority of their contractors and FTE are offshore.
It's not that people are ruling out whole classes of employment, it's that the market is flooded, and companies aren't hiring at much as they are claiming (for tax purposes).
The startup route I think at the moment is much better than large corporations.
I can say similar things about working at large corporations at the moment.
I just lost my position a couple of weeks ago due to downsizing. Over 60 resumes out and not one call back. I know others in my area (GTA) fighting for the job and recruiters are getting hundreds of resumes for each position. it is a battle.
Start a OnlyFans.
I agree, it is sad. I am still employed but constantly seeing posts here and on LinkedIn from people in tech getting laid off. I hope it all changes soon. Maybe interest rates will eventually come down and companies will start borrowing and expanding again..
D1 - it's not collusion, it's McKinsey
Does Anyone Actually Produce a Product.? Or Do Actual Work.,? (Fixing, Making, Fabricating).. Or Are All "Jobs" On Here Pyping on a Computer.?
Its called software engineering because you actually have to produce a tangible product from an idea. The very technology you used to comment on this post and very systems used to order materials and products were all made possible from "Pyping" on a computer. Even metallurgy and machining that scale with demand eventually end up hiring computer pyping folks because thats the new standard. Your comment just reeks of arrogance and has the classic only "blue collar" trades are "real" jobs.
In my year of looking since my "forced retirement" from my job of over 15 years, I've looked at about everything. The issue with some startups is that they don't offer a salary up equity in their deal. At my age, I'm just looking for a paycheck to get me to my real retirement, I don't have decades left to build for.
Yeah, but have you ever tried making a perfect grilled cheese sandwich while being chased by a goose? Some battles just can't be won. Just call me "Mr. Henry Chicken."
I was just laid off 2 weeks ago (over 10 years in IT) due to "downsizing" (offices were sold to competitor) and now have to compete against hundreds of resumes for a job. It is a real challenge and looking at a start up if I cannot find something soon.
I've been exploring wellfound.com lately. See if there's anything of interest on there. Some are small startups in the early stage, some are way past that.
