And everyone wants to work with you bc you’re “so chill”. Not giving a damn goes a long way, not to mention what it does for your mental health.
This is the secret they don't want you to know
“Let’s use your suggested edit so that I don’t have to think about this anymore”
My philosophy is, Round 1 is for us. Every other round, not so much.
Sad but true
Learn how the game is played, then play it to the best of your ability.
100%. It took me a long time to realize this but once I did this often abusive industry became so much more enjoyable
I just need to learn to get better at not caring.
You get screwed enough, it gets easier.
Cared too much about the work the first 5 years of my career, and even got complained by others to my CD that I pushed too hard on others. And they I went freelance. Take the money, do the job, build my own case study for my book, helped my mental health so much.
Amen!
#FreelanceMindset. I’m half kidding because I always want to do the best work possible for the people that are paying me, but also, I just want them to keep paying me. :)… it’s amazing how conciliatory and collaborative and acquiescent and pleasant to work with you can be when you no longer have to feel like every creative discussion is a battle you must win
Serious question, I try really hard to care and fight for what I believe is the best the work should be. My mentor who is a legendary CCO has these values. Will some people actually not appreciate this way of working?
Idk, when I was a junior I tried to fight for the best work. It didn’t help me. Even after I quite literally let them tank my projects, overruling my opinions. Only once they saw the mess they made did my CD give me reigns on the project. But only once they destroyed its potential, and there was nothing to pick up but the mutilated pieces and working weekends and holidays to get to launch.
CDs and senior people want to feel like they know everything and know what’s best. It sucks but the politics ruined the fun and whimsy of this industry for me.
And how much of a jerk you can be when you only care about that one idea that’s guaranteed to win you an award.
Tips for how not to give a f&$!? Whatcha got?
Diplomatic was not what I was. I was a raging a××hole. I knew my career was done so why not have some fun.
Seeing this play out with a manager in real time. They have something to say about everything that hits their desk and people dislike working with them strongly.
Also, hopefully at some point your book will be in a good place. Let’s face it—as a freelancer—your odds of creating a gold Lion piece are slim to none. Give them what they want (to the best of your abilities, of course) and then just count your money.
