After a shitty, dead first half of 2024, things really picked up for me in the end of Q3 and I finished the year right with revenue around where 2023 was. It wasn’t always creative or sexy work but I’ll call it a win. I hope you all had a rebound too.
Right now I’m finishing up a project that won’t die and pitching a few others. Nothing solid booked yet but they’re people I’ve worked with before so I’m optimistic. As far as the rest of the year goes, I work on about 50% pharma but it’s mostly healthcare provider oriented projects so I’m hopeful that it won’t be affected by any HHS changes. Overall though I just feel like there’s more going on now, more boards at this point of the calendar than last year and more talk of projects out into the future. I’m optimistic, at least career-wise.
On my mind is the merger of Getty and Shutterstock. It’s still the Wild West out there in terms of ownability of AI images and if they can come up with an indemnified solution then that would put my mind at ease a little but I’m still very wary. For what it’s worth I still prefer Filmsupply anyway but I bet they’re being affected by AI too. I’m troubled by all the usual pitfalls of AI like putting creators out of work, LLMs being trained on work whose creators aren’t compensated, legal, etc. That it might save me time and money isn’t enough to convert me at this point.
Hope you all are well and for those in LA (and everywhere, really) are safe. Here’s to a prosperous 2025 for everyone.
I’m in NYC. Last year was the worst / most scary year I’ve ever had in terms of scarcity of work. Most of my friends said the same. In November though I suddenly got slammed and took on as much as I could through December to help fill the hole. I’m booked right now and cautiously optimistic about this year.
I think a lot about what caused last year and I have a lot of theories (residual issues from the strikes trickling down to advertising, economy, election year) but I’m not totally sure. Was it a blip? I hope so.
NYC - I landed a contract gig last year which has extended several times beyond its original end date. So I’m kind of just riding out the storm with that. Although while that’s been going on, two of my best clients have been shaken up by closures/mergers so not sure how things will look if I return to full on freelancing. I’ve heard some positive signs from others in my network but we’ll see how the year shapes up.
