Because legal protection is bad for all employees in the US. And it's illegal to fire or discriminate on the basis of pregnancy, but really hard to prove and as part of a mass layoff definitely not provable.
It's definitely shitty, though. I had it happen to a coworker on her maternity leave, and she had also just found out she had breast cancer.
Things like this are part of why it really sucks to have your health care tied to your employer, too.
I was laid off at 8 months pregnant. Employers are also ignoring the struggle of looking for new work when you’re in the thick of pregnancy or taking care of a newborn. It’s emotionally and often physically impossible. Still trying to get my career back on track 1.5 years later.
Wow so this is legal in the US? That is really shocking. I'm sorry to everyone that is going through this, I can't imagine how awful it must be.
