I’ve said yes/no on hundreds of interviews. You have to emotionally remove yourself. If you have a very clear set of criteria it’s not really you making the decision it’s the criteria.

Integrity in hiring is about stewardship, which might not always be popular, but is absolutely necessary for the company and its people to thrive. So I'd never spent a minute feeling bad about it tbh.

Yes, but only when pressured to hire the buddy/family/cheapest/frat/sorority/sports teammate/h1b/etc candidate instead of the most qualified candidate. I will always spend political capital to say no to those candidates for the good of my teams & company.

for the ones you have said no to.. and the candidate is great you can provide support in obtaining another position within the company/org.
