I'd choose your family right now. I think longterm you'd regret choosing the board role over them.
Do you have a sense of what your board duties / expectations will entail? Some board positions can be like a second job and some equate to a few hours per month. I would get some more info before making the decision.
Is it a paid position? Think twice if it’s pro bono. You’ll find that most non-paid boards are difficult to engage. You’ll get one or two passionate members that end up doing significantly more work. If you’re looking to learn about the ins and outs of being on a board, it might be worth you while, but set expectations up front about time commitments. Don’t join a committee right off the bat…they are time sucker uppers.
I have been trying to get a board role for a while. They are not easy to get and especially for women.
Board roles usually meet only 4 times a year. My suggestion is find out the level of engagement that is required.
Assuming company is private role varies dramatically. From a figurehead to a kitchen cabinet. Will it be fiduciary board (ie actual legal responsibility) or advisory board (optional to advise an owner /manager). Also is this an existing board or something being newly firmed
my board positions take very little time. Ask how much of a time commitment is required, and if it’s under a few hours a month, and the company is doing something that is of real interest to you and you’re not just doing someone a favor - it is likely worth it.
If you can make a difference, do it.
I would ensure that you know all of the details before you accept. If you are not being paid then I would say its a hard no, atleast for me because I don't have that kind of time to spare.
