Congratulations. it's the best thing you will ever do.
My tip is to quickly find exit opportunities so you get to see your child grow up and don't have to miss anything.
Thanks for clarifying. Ideally, I’d like to stay until I’m either at or close to making manager, but I understand what you’re saying and as my kid grows, I’ll probably feel the need to re-evaluate. At a minimum I want to stay one year after making senior.
From a female fish: take as much leave as you can. I wouldn't tell my team before 4 or 5 months in as a guy, unless your wife is having terrible morning sickness and you need to take time off to help care for her. Consider going on a fwa when you're back. DO NOT WORK WHILE YOU ARE ON PARENTAL LEAVE
Agreed. Honor your time off. Don’t work. Don’t feel bad.
Congrats. I have a 1.5 year old while working at deloitte. First, In my experience we had a guy in the middle of busy season go out parantal leave who was up for senior promotion. It did not affect him at all as he got promoted. This was pre covid. Second, if you are afraid about performance you can take your parental leave any time before the one year mark. You can coordinate with your wife this way to get better adjusted. Finally you also have fmla that you can use as well for childcare issues for a 12 month period.
Congrats, I had two babies while working in PA and it did not jeopardize my promotion. As for timing, I would say inform the team when your wife is about 4 to 6 month which will give your team enough time to plan. Also, if they are planning a huge project where you will be the lead let them even earlier, communication is the key.
As for taking time off, I would say take all the time off you guys need. Since your wife is working you will get 6 weeks of paternity time. I usually take 4 weeks when the baby arrives and then take the remaining two weeks over the next five months where needed. Planning is important but be ready to change since nothing goes according to plans with kids. It is all important and fun stuff so good luck . Feel free to DM me if you have any specific questions
Not sure if you’re at KPMG, but is it 2 weeks of parental leave + 6 weeks as primary caregiver or does that 6 weeks include the 2 weeks of parental leave?
Congrats OP! As a dad, I can tell you that it will be difficult to work in PA and be a dad. Specially if you are travel to a client and you miss many milestones.
PA is very tough for both moms and dads, and you need clear/constant communication with your partner and sometimes help from your family. I know a lot of people make it work and are successful, but again you’ll need a lot of communication.
Good luck OP, and I recommend you to read the books of this author

I agree, especially if you are in audit. Since I am in tax, I am able to be home with my kids. It has to be significantly more difficult to be in audit
Congrats! I have two girls and they are awesome!
You will be fine in public now, but once they are 4 or 5, you may think about a new role that allows you to spend more time with them. It is a crazy world and kids need both parents involved.
That’s good to hear! I don’t necessarily want to make partner at a B4, but I’d really like to stay atleast until a year after making senior, but preferably til manager.
Congratulations :)
