I’ve been asked to step out of pure client delivery and into more internal leadership with talent and innovation. The challenge is that doesnt always translate well back to the client-facing revenue model. Anyone here carved out a path that balances internal leadership and still grows the book?

I think what I have seen is that when leadership changes, the role you are doing is no longer valued in the same way. If you think the value endures, then can be a good move. If not, I would be wary of giving up your client facing responsibilities.

I would only consider an internal role when I will be within 4 years of retirement. Pour back into my firm all I can and not have to worry about a way back to client service.

Assuming, you have a good thing going right now, in this market and with the leadership unpredictability in most of our firms right now, that would be a hell no for me.

All that said, without context, hard to give you solid advice. I would suggest to talk to someone senior you trust in your firm about this. They will be able to connect the dots much better.

It’s possible your highest value is internally focused. Most firms don’t invest appropriately in some of the internal roles. It’s worth consideration.

But after you do your due diligence, trust your gut.

Internal leadership has many dynamics and offers many ways to deliver impact. DM me and I’ll share some perspective.

Do both, rewrite the role to include keeping some key accounts. It helps you be innovative (innovation from the ivory tower doesn’t work in consulting) and keeps you relevant and revenue generating.

I would only do it if I plan on getting out of consulting. My mentor was elevated to be the right hand of the CEO of the firm and was axed completely (let go) shortly after the CEO stepped down. They did not get a chance to go back to client service.

Could be dangerous. 1. leaving client relationships and having to rebuild whole new business (team and clients) when/if you come back to the client side. 2. From experience, internal positions are hard to evaluate and compensate for fairly. They may come back and say you are doing great but we will cut your comp. Make sure you have a good agreement on what constitutes success and how it will be rewarded…

It could also be very interesting, bring you additional visibility, connections, impact and worth the risk or pay decrease.

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.

This is super weird but I feel like I can’t relate easily to people. Hear me out - I moved and lived in different continents, countries every 5 years or so until now… I feel like I’m an outlier and my life is super different from anyone else’s. I have some friends I’ve met at each stage of my life, but it’s been temporary. I feel like I’m always going in a different direction than others. It makes it difficult to have a stable life and close friends..

Are there any debt consolidation options for a professional family man with a decent credit score, who's let high interest credit card debt get out of hand? I get the mailers that entice with a low advertised rate, and then the offer comes back at something slightly less than what I am already paying. I am thinking something along the lines of a bank that I can talk to, and explain exactly where the money is going, not being apposed to a direct deposit to the card companies themselves.
