Yep, it's true. Writing with your hand can help boost creativity, focus, and cognitive engagement, which is not really happening when you're typing. I wanted to started taking writing more seriously in the way that it's a part of my daily life, so I set up a cozy, inviting writing corner for myself, and I actually spent a good amount of money on it. Now I write every day for 30 minutes with my favorite notebook and pen, and it's the most grounding ritual I have in life.
I usually write ideas in a small notebook first before typing them up
I really dig the Lechteurm 1917 journals. I have one for song lyrics, one for free writing which I do occasionally and then another one for notes in meetings and to do list, etc. when I am super busy, I blast through one every two or three months. I do a good amount of writing on my laptop and I do a good amount of speech-to-text using my phone. But I do try to write a little bit by hand every day. There’s something respectful and sometimes awe inspiring when people see I take notes by hand. I once had a client dressed down his entire staff in front of me because I was taking notes in a meeting and they weren’t. Awkward but cool.
I love these, it’s the primary way I work.
I only handwrite when I’m brainstorming campaign concepts and theme lines. It works for me as a way to brain dump, tighten, massage, doodle, and just think out loud on the page. Oddly enough, it’s the only time I don’t write on a paper’s lines (as opposed to when I’m jotting down a quick to-do list). By the time I’m done, it’s always this weird, diagonal-angled, flower-ringed, chicken-scratched word cloud — but it’s a word cloud with four or five solid ideas. It ain’t pretty, but it’s served me well.
Love it when I’m stuck. I’ll move between a Google doc, notes app, post its, lines notebooks, printer paper… all different flavors help jog the brain.
I hand write notes in meetings and also sketch out layouts for ad lobs. I’ve also always kept a journal.
I did that a lot when I started. Got blasted for having chicken scratch notes all over my desk. Lightly teased is perhaps more accurate. Moved to digital notes, and it is def not the same.
