I’ve noticed finance job posts asking for “public accounting background preferred” even when the job isn’t audit-related. Is this just code for “we only hire Big Four people”? Would you still apply, or move on if your background doesn’t match that checkbox?

Still apply—many hiring managers care more about skills than keywords. Frame your experience clearly.

Preferred is always the keyword. I’d prefer to win the lottery and live my life in an all-inclusive resort, but I will be at work tomorrow.

How do I find those jobs? Haha I have some experience in the big four but all the skills under the umbrella.
