I’ve worked at four firms now, and in every one, the document naming conventions have been total chaos. Some people add full case names, some use initials, others just slap FINAL_FINAL2_v3 on everything. No consistency. No searchability. Has anyone actually implemented a standardized doc naming system that stuck, especially one attorneys actually followed?

We made a style guide, trained the team, and attorneys ignored it by week two. They want to name files like it’s still 2004.

Get buy in from the paralegals and EAs. From my experience attorneys don’t save things themselves. It’s hard to gain traction. From my experience, don’t be rigid on the format but rather words to include and versioning up drafts. If there’s a metadata card consider using it to add additional searchable fields or notes.

This has been similar to my experience as well, except for one firm where they were not sees about everything and you felt like you could be fired at any time. So they had sort of a system, but then they would have to teach it to new people all the time b/c of the huge turnover.

Please help! I'm looking for writing terminology. At our agency, we are getting more into creative writing vs ... executional writing? Please help me find the right term. Creative means developing the big idea (concepting), writing scripts and headlines with flair, etc.) for an awareness "hook" and then the other camp, which includes brochures, one pagers, banner ads, sales sheets.

What should we call the other type of writing? (Cont in comments)

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

I am prior military and went to law school. I had a family to take care of while I was a student, hence I went as fast as possible to get to a paycheck, graduating in 2 years, and bypassing the standard summer clerkships. How could I get some experience strictly remote? I am w-2 working as an accountant in healthcare, have passed the bar and am working on my CPA license (studying starts at 3 am, then work FT). I would like to eventually hang a shingle as a tax lawyer, but need experience. TIA!

What is the average paralegal salary in NC for a commercial real estate law office? I’ve been with a great firm for the last 9 years but am starting to wonder if I’m being compensated fairly. The company is about 30 employees (mostly attorneys) but I work primary for 4 of the attorneys.

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)?
