Happy to see someone breaking the awful silence here!
The harsh truth is that Fishbowl targets people that are competitive in their careers. The bulk of it is salary discussions/career guidance/referrals/corridor talks/insider knowledge in corporate. Norway doesn't have that critical mass to warrant a presence in places like this that are dominated by US and tech/corporate.
The Norwegian job market is super chill, socialism is king and nobody is forced into grinding the ladder. It's not the US where with certain jobs you don't make it til the end of the month and with others you get 20x as much. Here nobody even wants to grind the ladder: it's hardwired in the Norwegian culture, everybody is equal and nobody is better than the others (even though Norway as a collective is the best among other countries though). Everybody gets fundamentally the same salary regardless of what they do. There are notable exceptions, but a crane operator makes in the same ballpark as a chef, which makes the same as a software developer or a nurse or an insurance agent or teacher. And that's enough to make a decent living, afford and loan and coast. You don't really need Fishbowl pep-talks to min-maxing your career, you'll land safely regardless and Friday @ 3pm du går til hytta og tar det med ro. The other side of it is that you just aren't making the big money, unless you go entrepreneur/startup and crack the code or get CxO level in some mid-tier company (only possible if your personal network is super strong and full of powerful friends).
There is no real big corporate (you basically have local branches of the big4, some MBB and that's it), big tech is also nowhere on the map... This means that all of the fishbowlsy talk happens in local venues super-specific to small Norwegian work environments. You have to dig r/norge or stuff like diskusjon.no for some interesting insights.
hmm... quite right. There is an influx, but getting into STEM or any sector, with an immigrant background is alot hard. Although there is a good blend of diversity when it comes to STEM, but diversity starts diminishing as you go upwards to more managerial/powerful positions.
By the way, there are more immigrants in blue-collar jobs too 😄. like plumbing, renovations, cleaning, taxi services etc these areas are heavily taken up by immigrants.
This is a great question, I’m very happy I found this bowl.
My husband and I are thinking of moving to Norway in 2024, and will apply to EY Oslo office to work in Consulting, as Managers. We’re currently in the EY London office and we’re considering a change - tired from the perpetual grind, unable to get on the property ladder or start a family and generally hoping for a better life for our future kids.
I am hoping I can get some advice on whether a move to Norway would be the change we’re after; would we be able to live comfortably and afford our first home working as 2 x managers in Consulting?
Thank you all for the kind advice.
You'll have a great time, but TBH learning the language is the best investment in the long term, outside of work.

UDI hates immigrants? Lol
Can't see where i said that. Hate might be a strong word, but yes... UDI's job is not 'giving visas', but it is to 'not give visas'. Its about approach... they are focused on keeping a check on number of immigrants.
Just like directorate of immigration of any other first world country.
