Just a few weeks into my first industrial engineering job at a manufacturing plant, and I'm finding the chaotic and unpredictable production environment is super challenging. I'm embarrassed that college didn't prepare me for this pace, and now I'm making small mistakes because I can't anticipate or react fast enough. Is this normal for a noob, and does it before more second-nature with more experience?

I honestly think this is a super normal experience to have, and I wouldn't be hard on yourself. It will totally become more natural as you keep learning and practicing. It's hard for college to prepare people for real life work environments, and you picked a relatively chaotic one for sure, but you'll get the hang of it!

Thanks for the encouragement

Very normal. Especially for your first job out of college. It usually takes a few months or even a year to get to a place where you feel comfortable at any job. Take a deep breath and understand that this is all a normal part of the process :)

Thanks for sharing!

That is a completely normal reaction. The only way to be truly "prepared" for a job is too have done it for a while. Work environments can vary wildly depending on the company and industry,

My partner got a City of Toronto offer. Salary band is 104-121k. HR asked for his expectations and he said 115k. HR came back with a 106k offer stating nobody on the team makes that much so they cant offer it. Also said she is unsure if there is any wiggle room if any at all. I’ve looked at everyone on the team with the same titles salary on the sunshine list and the lowest I see is 121k. I assume there is an OT component of some sort but also can’t confirm. Thoughts? /negotiating advice?

I will possibly be getting a machinist role through some contacts, and I have no experience in the field and I’m wondering what I could expect to make, when I look up average salaries for a machinist position I see around 65k but that seems too good for my age and experience so I’m wondering what some others in the trade on here are making

How do I get a job as a Mechanical Engineer if I dont have experience?

I couldn’t get an internship while in school. I have a BS in ME and projects from school under my belt. I’ve also passed the FE exam. I’ve been mostly just doing CAD for a company for the last year by creating minimally dimensioned drawings and moving parts around in assemblies. I want to evolve in my career and be doing more. I worked so hard to earn my degree and I feel like I’m not even using it. But who will hire me?
