I’ve seen this becoming more common. Smells like exploitation to me.

If there assignment takes about a week to finish, it’s seems off.

I am seeing this pop up more and more these days. It looks like, the company had issues with candidates and new hires who were in the last role. Maybe the hiring manager needs more from the person, before they move with hiring someone. I do send out assignments for one role I am working on, but it takes about a day to finish, not a week.
Tbh I don’t mind assignments in general, they are a chance to show what a I can do. Especially now when you can’t really trust resumes.
But getting the assignment after just a short conversation where we didn’t really discuss the role, is weird. I do have a detailed brief for it but it’s a new company and a new role so I’d rather discuss it with the hiring manager before I spend a week putting something together.
Besides, wouldn’t it make sense for them to try to narrow down the pool further first? Assessing more than 2 large submissions sounds like an overkill. 🤷🏻♀️
Getting you to do what is basically a weeks unpaid work at this early stage does seem strange.A process like this usually takes place later in the decision making between two final candidates, where the interviewing panel can’t agree on which person to offer the job too.I just hope this isn’t setting a precedent for all employers.

How would you know what they expect? That seems weird

That’s what I am saying. If this becomes more of a thing with other companies, it’s going to take even longer to get a job.
My company does this. I did not have to do it when I was hired or I probably wouldn’t have pursued the job. Our HR person does a phone screen and emails the assignment if the candidate passes the initial screen. The assignment is only supposed to take around 5 hours but I would bet most candidates take longer with research etc included. It’s all made up data so it’s not usable for any real business purpose. It’s more to see how someone approaches the assignment but then as interviewers we basically are told to grill the person on the assignment and point out any minor flaws.
