Unless you have a handful of passion projects that showcase your creative abilities, you will not be able to land a copywriting job at a reputable agency without a spec book.

This is not the video you should be watching. This video is talking about copywriters who work in direct response, which is very salesy copywriting. I recommend you get into a copywriting program, like book180 that will help your learn the right skills than teaching it by yourself.

Did you take a portfolio class in undergrad? The best ad programs offer them and it’s cheaper to do them there than pay extra afterward for portfolio school.

like

Agree with others that this video won’t help. Please feel free to DM me but TLDR a spec portfolio is what will get you in the door.
There are a lot of programs that you can take to develop your portfolio.

All in all you’ll want to come up with about 6 independent concepts for 6 different brands. Include a variety of executions from print ads to social ads. You want to show a range but as a writer you can really lean into the print ads since it allows for you to exercise your copy skills. Using other executions outside of print can do this too. These other tools let you show copy skills and conceptual ability. Pick a range of brands to show you’re not a one trick pony but choose stuff your passionate about it will come through in your work. Good luck!!! As I said earlier please feel free to reach out if you want to speak further

Let’s talk speed reading. I’m a slow reader and listened to a podcast recently on speed reading. I’m intrigued. Who here speed reads? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? I do mostly litigation and am thinking that speed reading would help with research but maybe not things like doc review where you need to review for both responsiveness and privilege.

Do large law firms really recieve enough applications for a position that they cannot follow up when someone reaches out to check on thier application? I get that if you have to reach out, they probably weren't interested anyways, I'm just curious why there is a practice of just leaving applicants in the wind. And also, how does one go about finding out why they were rejected, if thier qualifications are "impressive"?

Jumping off a related topic: am I delusional to not care about jr/int/sr level titles? I've been a "copywriter" since the day I started and steadily gained responsibility, autonomy, and money. Happy with career progression, always getting juicier assignments, work directly with ECDs/CCOs... am I missing something crucial? Is my case an anomaly? Or is it okay not to push for a title upgrade?

I don't know if this is a recent change but I’m seeing postings for junior copywriter/community manager roles. Have these roles always been attached or posted at a junior level? Is this merged role worth considering as someone young in the industry with more traditional intern and freelance copy experience.
