“What salary are you looking for?”
“I like to take into consideration benefits, PTO, 401k match as part of total compensation value. What range do you have budgeted for the position?”
This turns the question around and allows them to give you a range rather than a point blank number, which usually makes people more comfortable. Good luck!

The best piece of advice I got was to say a number high enough that it makes you uncomfortable. I did it and they actually matched it. Be bold but not unrealistic and you’ll be fine if you have to give a number out first.
i love that, thank you!!! there's always the thought that if you go too high, they'll write you off. but like you said - bold but not unrealistic... maybe if a typical range is 100-120k, what would you consider a bold but realistic number?
I’d just go in with the fact market rates vary widely depending on a number of factors and ask them for their budget or range for the role

Man that seems to be the new line! You are not the first person I have seen post that a recruiter said this to them. I don't get why we are gatekeeping salaries.
