Lateraling up question: I’m a 4th year tax associate at a firm in the middle of the AmLaw 100 on the east coast. I would like to achieve some combination of moving up into a V30-50 and going back to the west coast—it does not have to be both, though. We have some offices on the west coast, but they do not have any transactional people there. Has anyone done something similar or have any advice? It’s not that I’m UNhappy, it’s just that I’ve caught the disease of wondering “what if?”

Could u ask to be based out of a west coast office while still working with the same partners?

like

I realize that may have been unclear and not address still working with the same people: My focus was on not physically being there to remind them of my existence as easily and maintain relationships. Particularly if we eventually change and decide people need to be in-office every day.

I’ve been at my company for 8 months. I just found out another designer who has been here for several years gets an annual bonus at the end of the fiscal year. I have never been told about a bonus and haven’t gotten one yet for the previous fiscal year that ended In July. Should I have been told I get a bonus when I signed on or are they typically a surprise?

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

Recommendations for a west coast recruiter specializing in tax positions? For someone in biglaw who wants to go in house.

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

Junior biglaw tax associate here. Considering an internal transfer vs lateral to NYC from a smaller market. Any firms in the v20 I should avoid/look into? I have pretty reasonable hours at my current firm and trying to avoid going to a sweatshop. Interested in international tax and hoping to avoid m&a. Firms I’m considering: Latham, Gibson, Sidley, Goodwin, Milbank. Thank you all!

When the IRS (e.g., a RO/AO/Examiner) calls or writes a letter… How do you verify that it’s really the IRS and not a scam? I’m new to tax law and I’m worried that I’m going to respond to/answer a scam and give away client info (or my own tax preparer info).
