Long story short: I took a year off to take some time to reset mentally and physically after a health scare. I kept the brain and skills sharp by advising a couple of startups during this time. Now that I’m all recovered, I’m looking to jump back into the fire. I left as a practice leader for new product and new market strategy with a sub-practice in new energy. The senior leadership at my old firm is all gone due to turnover and they all retired so I’m on my own to find a new home. ->

Obviously, new energy is almost all but dead for now. However, I do have former client contacts that are looking for me to come back to them so I do have a book of business. What’s the group think consensus of trying to stay in consulting or trying to get into industry? I’m USA based and a US citizen.

Why not start your own firm?

I’ve got a young family and while I have living expenses for another year, I don’t have the free cash flow to start a firm. Selling myself as an advisor or small freelance projects isn’t going to jumpstart a whole firm without additional partners and staff.

I’ve been wondering about the starting your own firm model - hard when you have a family and cash flow needs. Would people try and get PE backing?

I think so if you have a compelling case with good talent.

I would get in touch with some headhunters - they can give you a read on the market. They are generally happy to help share market observations and that can be a good data point.

Just moved from consulting to industry and so far the stress is way down. So if that’s a factor given your health scare, I’d say industry.

About 25-30 plus firm shutdown in July and December.

Start your own firm if you have the expertise and experience. They will always be in demand.

Hello All,

Have a few questions regarding IBM Joining, HR response is strangely lacking and so does in the slack(prejoin channels). Hoping can be cleared here..
a) I've been told virtual onboarding is no longer a thing.
How many days does in-person onboarding activities occur?
b) HR Informed,"After onboarding is complete, can get perm WFH based on project or extension of WFH as IBM is flexible"
Is this true? Can managers extend/grant remote for a month then let us transit to remote model?

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!
