Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!

In my opinion, go with the 2.5 month course. I likewise came from a civil law jurisdiction and thought that the traditional version offered enough materials. The bar is more about knowing general knowledge about a lot of subjects than going for a deep dive. There’s only so much you can test. A lot of is also self studying and doing practice exams. Spending your time watching barbri videos just isn’t a good use of your time.

I did it as a foreign lateral and I would recommend 6-months. Make the firm pay for it because calculus changes if it’s your own money. Once you start working, you can’t keep up the pace of a 2.5 months course. That is geared towards recent grads who are studying full time.

likefunny

That would be awesome but I’ll start working after I take the exam. I will be basically focused on the bar exam half December, all January and almost all February, so I think I could keep up with the 2.5 months course.

I recommend going with the 2.5 months. Never heard of anyone deriving enough benefit from the extended course to justify the additional expense

like

I come from a common law country and I used Kaplan when I took the bar. Personally, I think the 2.5k plan would be sufficient. It’s really about you and how much you think you can comprehend in such a short space of time. Plus how smart you are with knowing what is required of you - structuring your answers blah blah. One can study for the bar for a year and still fail it. You also have JDs who have written this multiple times even though they have been taught for three years about American law. The bar is just some weird stuff that even the most intelligent person can fail. While that may seem like an argument for doing the extended prep course, it’s not. My point is, I know several LLMs including those from civil law countries who wrote the bar and passed with just the regular bar prep course. I did some bar subjects during my LL.M, and frankly I don’t think they were particularly helpful at the end of the day. My Kaplan prep course and supplements like JD Advising were just fine.

like

Do you remember / know how many hours did you study daily during the 2.5-month course?

Thanks. Are you a JD or LLM?

Copywriter with serious imposter syndrome at new job! How do senior writers up their game? Was in-house 1.5 years and underpaid in NYC. With only previous freelance experience (and nonprofit and grant writing before that) figured I had to slog through it for years. Cut to now, 6 months into a new copywriting role at huge tech company. My salary almost quintupled overnight. I think I’m doing great, but that depends on the day and who I work with (no other writers by the way).

Career advice?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.

Any opinions/tips?

I am in the finance dept at my agency and have been struggling to get into the media department. I'm fine starting off in a junior role but after countless applications no one will give me a chance.

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.
