Looking at postings, more companies are posting salary ranges now, but they can still be huge — like $150K–$300k” for a role. How accurate are these posted ranges in your experience? Are companies or firms really open to the higher end, or is that just window dressing?

From what I've seen, they are usually sticking to the lower ranges and saying it's "based on experience" but leaving it exceptionally vague. In my opinion, ranges like that are almost as useless as not listing any salary range at all.

likesmart

Agreed. It’s useless in general but i think is good that if you can get something in the upper half

From my experience, it’s safe/reasonable to target mid-point of the range. If you are a great fit, I’d encourage you to advocate for the upper half.

Thanks!

In my experience, that upper salary band is just for show. It might just be because I’m nowhere near making the case for myself to be at the top of it, too.

I think you are correct

Providing useless ranges are probably meant to comply with local laws requiring wage info but without actually disclosing anything of value

I figured it, they just wanted to comply with the legal requirements

I have come in above the upper band for every single IHC role I’ve ever gotten (3 so far).

That’s great!

Also is the number just the base or it’s the total?
