Looking to convert from freelance to fulltime after a 8 year run. Currently freelance now at an Omnicom agency and looking to start fulltime at a publicis agency. But doing the math and at best offer its almost $100,000 less than what I do freelance most years. The salary is what I earned 10 years ago on staff. Make this math make sense. Freelance was VERY slow last quarter so I panicked. I feel like freelance is still a risk I need to take?

I would not go full time at any holding co agency right now

Bc there's less stability there than in freelance market. For me, freelance market includes ad agencies, in-house marketing departments, production companies, etc

I’m with you. Got laid off last year and wanted to stick with FT but the salaries were just not there, even for a higher title. I do want the “stability” again but when freelance is hot, the money is too good to pass up.

With the way things are right now. I'd say they both have their risks and benefits. FTE is so rocky with any of the holding companies as they're trying to figure out their new structures but they also seem to have the benefits that many are looking for. And possibly some security depending on the account you'll be on. Freelance always has a risk especially when it's slow. But then if you have a stable amount of freelance clients you regularly go to then you might even be more stable than FTE.

This is just my observation. Curious to see others.

Agreed if you have a good amount of work and are making good money I'd stick with freelance. You can find independent medical benefits.

like

I would say depends on your needs and situation. Do you need insurance? What’s your role? Creative or other? It seems creative opportunities are more frequent than other roles but as you said it still seems volatile. If you do go FT, you also have the opportunity to make new connections, and if you don’t like it you can go back to freelance.

like

I don't need the benefits using spouses. Senior Creative Copy. The company and FT team sounds great. But the pay is what is what I made 7-8 years ago when I was on staff. Crazy.

like

When you got off the ladder, you got off the salary ladder too. Getting back on the ladder now is going to be harder than when you left the first time, because you are 7-8 years older now and don't really have anything to show for it. You probably didn't win any awards as a freelancer. Your book is probably just going to feature incomplete concepts that never become campaigns.

So it isn't that surprising you're back where you left off. If you can get the same title as when you left, that's a huge win. And let's face it, you made that $100,000+ double dipping occasionally, which is over now especially with the consolidations.

Unfortunately when you go the freelance route your career takes a bit of a different path and it’s often hard to catch up immediately to where you once were - salary, responsibilities etc.
I see hiring managers make all kinds of assumptions when evaluating freelancers who want full time. These assumptions include questioning the depth of the freelancer’s experience and commitment to staying in a full time role.
