More interesting than value is what have folks done to establish their primary residence as a permanent home to live out their years (or are you not planning on staying there until death)?
For example:
- bought up 2-3 adjacent apartments in a NYC building and merged them into a single.
- bought a farm not too far from an airport to support travel for work
- have a simple home in the burbs
- just playing it one day at a time and renting
- bought a second home somewhere you plan to retire
No wrong answers, just curious what others have done.

For us, our NYC primary residence now is not our forever home; maybe our forever pied-à-terre - as I have zero inclination to live in the city full time once I retire. Need more nature in my life and I’m only here for the hustle.
We have a place upstate NY that I’d love to keep as a Spring-Fall residence, post retirement.

LOL. I have a life-long friend who comes close to this. He owns 3 condos in places that people like to visit (AZ, FL and NH). He has them all on VRBO. St Pete is his primary residence, but he’s been known to vacate and sleep in his tent if someone wants to rent it.

Watch an old movie and want to live where they did and how they did. It was always better back in the day. They split the 1940s three story apartment into three single story apartments around 1970 before splitting them each into three 1-3 bedroom apartments sometime after 2004 or so.

Our home is under $1M, but it’s 6400 sf under roof, on a 3/4 acre lot and in one of the most livable cities in America. The master suite alone is larger than most apartments.
