What’s WLB like in business roles at Google?
I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Salary, perks and work life balance will be brilliant; there’s little room to grow in the team in terms of positions
Maybe the question could be… How can people reach a great growth rate in Google?

Are you in the US right now? I’d imagine you’re making more currently than what you’d make in Dublin, given EU salaries and the ~45% income tax rate. Also, there is a MASSIVE housing crisis in Dublin rn. Source: work in the Dublin office making a lot less than what I was making in US

If your #1 objective is to keep get promoted and get higher titles, then Google will not be the right move. Promotions take very long as it’s a very political process and everyone you work with you’ll find is very qualified and also trying to grow. Past L4, it’ll likely take 2yrs MINIMUM between promos. There are many folk who stay at L5 their whole careers
My doubts are more about the margin of growth in Google Dublin… I think that obtaining managerial positions is very very very difficult compared to Jellyfish or other consulting companies!
Ok great but what is the takeaway? I’d like to work like no tomorrow in Google as I do in consulting… Is it possible?
What are your career goals? If you're still at a stage where you are focused on career advancement and managing people, stay in consulting. An L4 role at Google or elsewhere will be there later, and you may even qualify for L5. But if you're ready to rest and vest, and not worry about growth, then take Google. Sounds like you are in the former position.
Yeah, I’m in a former position here on fishbowl. The fact is that you’re right, I’m in a advancement situation here in consulting! My first objective is to grow like no tomorrow and my main fair is that the possibilities of growth in Google are no so fast like in consulting. Eg… What about level 5,6,7? I’m afraid of if a position doesn’t open I’ll be like level 4 for 4-5-6 years!
OP did you end up at Deloitte instead? Fellow ex Jellyfish at Deloitte Digital now. Trying to figure out who you are ;) I’m guessing a tradelab person if you’re in Milan?
