My firm's idea of “flexibility” is letting us work from home… after we’ve already billed 10 hours in the office. I’m not kidding—that was an actual quote from a partner. It’s all performative: they’ll say they support work-life balance, then schedule 6:30 p.m. check-in calls and side-eye anyone who leaves before dark. I’m not expecting a remote free-for-all, but come on—don’t call it flexible if it’s just office work plus a late-night couch shift. Anyone out there actually working at a firm that gets what flexibility really means?

Can someone explain how billable hours work? At a new agency and although I had to fill timesheets at my previous agencies, they were mainly used to ensure we weren’t over servicing a client/for setting the appropriate retainer for contract renewals. I asked ppl at my agency but haven’t gotten a proper explanation. I get the impression that billing to the agency admin code isn’t recommended, and my manager said he bills everything to client codes, but that doesn’t make sense to me .

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.
