I’d go sooner if you can, it’s going to be scorching hot in August.
Pro
It’s a cheap time to go because it’s HOT
You’ll want to spend all your time in the pool or 5 steps away in the AC indoors. Sunrise is lovely (but very early) and sunset will be when the day finally becomes nice again.
Airbnb an entire house with a pool. There’s a lot of great ones. Hotels are meh unless you want to share the pool with kids and crowds. You can easily Uber or drive to the hotel restaurants and spas if you want.
Some shopping and art galleries to do on the main drag (but not pleasant in the heat) and the military air museum is a fun half day. Take the tram up Jacinto to beat some heat and have a nice leisurely hike with spectacular views, if you can time it for sunset for your ride down, it’s unparalleled magic.
Otherwise, try to stay indoors, and bring plenty of high-SPF sunscreen and big hats.
My friend owns a vacation rental company and has some great spots in Palm Springs https://www.athomeness.com
Apparently I’m a contrarian, but I love Palm Springs in the summer. Much cheaper, not as overrun by tourists, and we do have things like air conditioning, pools, and light clothing to manage the heat. Probably doesn’t hurt that I grew up in Florida, and consider 85 degrees in Orlando far less tolerable than 110 degrees in a desert “dry heat” climate like Palm Springs.
I went to the Ritz earlier this year and it was amazing. Not a lot of guests, so it still felt safe. Easily free upgrades for the reason.
Ouu I’ll do that next visit. I wanted a calm pamper weekend and watching the sunset by the fire pit was just that 😍
Rising Star
Definitely not. November and April are best. It will be unbearably hot.
Would book July or September ... there’s a party slated to happen in August and hotels/Airbnb rates may be abnormally high in Augfor that reason
Check out Splash House if you’re into that
It really depends what you want. Do you want a resort? Do you want a spa? Do you want to be near shopping and restaurants? The area is spread out and there are so many options. I was there this past weekend at a new small hot springs hotel in Desert Hot Springs which is complete opposite direction of Palm Springs city area so we did a lot of driving. Next time I go I want to stay at the Rowan because it is right in the middle of Palm Sprongs and you can walk to everything and more of a social scene.
Palm Springs in Aug will be hot, expect like 100-110, but it’s a dry heat and not unbearable. Did a weekend there this past august, it was around 108, the pool was like a warm bath, but it was nice and we could be outside the whole time. I’ve been there before when it was 120 and that was NOT bearable (like could barely breath without the air burning your lungs and couldn’t be outside for longer than 15 mins)
Do an Airbnb with AC and a pool. There are some awesome midcentury modern rental spaces that are totally dressed up and super fun!
Thank you so much everyone! All of this was incredibly helpful information and I’ll be sharing with my friend. I truly appreciate it!
I spend a lot of time in PS. I’ve stayed at resorts and at VRBO. MY favorite one is Check out this property on Vrbo https://t.vrbo.io/6cVxOtAkGfb
The V and the Ace hotel have a younger crowd and day parties on sundays. I’d def prefer Palm Springs in the cooler months as the hiking around that area is incredible
