Can't speak for the others, but Richmond is a great little city. The summer is similar to Atlanta (not as muggy) but winter gets a bit colder. More of an ice issue than snow, but you do get the occasional 6 incher that shuts the city down for a few days. Cost of living is beyond reasonable, and the city has a fairly young feel and artsy vibe. Not much going on outside of the city though. And as far as cities go, it's admittedly more of a town. However, one big drawback is there aren't a ton of agencies or media companies, so if you ever find yourself on the outs, you'll be looking at moving again.
Yeah, Martin is the big fish, but Arts & Letters is already about to move to a bigger building. Plus there’s CapitalOne and Carmax. And about 25,000 breweries
Atlanta is a fantastic place to be. My friend bought a few apartments there and pretty much now matches his job income in profit from them in just a few years. It’s a great and growing area.
It’s also a Mecca of educated southerners and the black community.
That’s great. I also love Atlanta, but it just isn’t sustainable for me anymore unfortunately

Raleigh, NC isn’t on your list but seams to be about the same speed as your other options. Seems to have some thriving advertising agencies popping up. I’ve been to Pittsburgh 2 million times and don’t know what they have out there, same with Virginia. Went to Raleigh for a wedding and by the second day was looking up apartments and job opportunities, love it down there, and prices for everything were insanely inexpensive. Especially compared to what I’m used to in NYC.

I transferred from BK to ATL and totally regret it. The small liberal community here in no way make up for the institutional racism, poverty and white male privilege. I'm female, and get the most vile street harassment every time I leave my spacious affordable apartment. All my coworkers live in the suburbs, it seems the only way to deal with the uncomfortable realities are to minimize your exposure to them by driving in and driving out every day.
Interesting choices. Smart if you can make it happen, your cost of living will be a fraction of a place like NY.
If macro economics is made up BS then sure.

If you’re interested in coming further north, might I suggest Detroit? I used to live in Richmond and planned to do a year or two in Michigan before moving back, but I love it here. Decent number of agencies (although mostly auto) and lots and lots of auto adjacent things.
It’s cold af but you’d both have cars and my mortgage payment on a 3bedroom house is $1000

I grew up in Greenville, and have lived in Atlanta. I’m in Charlotte now. G-ville has become a great small city, and quality of life is still very high. Less conservative than it used to be. But still very Southern and provincial. Good with the bad. As an office manager, if you’re a genial person, you should have no trouble finding work. As a paid media manager ... uh ... I doubt there is much out there. Small but high-performing agency scene, with EP+Co being the big player. There is a car dealership marketing agency that does a ton of business, though. Feel free to DM for details
I think you might be talking about the same car dealership agency he already works for haha. It works out for him because he can work remote and keep his salary, so that’s a plus for us if we move. Only one of us will have to find a job
I have lived in (not bragging) Boston, LA, Atlanta, Greenville and Richmond. Richmond is my fave
KC is cheap. And thinks of itself as up and coming.
You’ll need a car but can still afford a house.
Not much of an ad scene outside of a few larger agencies but seems to have some small indie places for local work. They probably have a good work/life balance and nice people but nothing with those little shops that’s going to get you out of KC later, though.
Why those places?
I’m not limited to those places. They’re just on the come-up and affordable
