Unfortunately, a lot of legacy and even digital publications don't recognize social media reach as valuable. I would encourage you to focus on getting published, even if you are making less, just to show that you have a history of working with publications.
Is your portfolio fully updated and tailored to the job you're applying for? In my case, the portfolio was holding me back because it didnt reflect what i was capable of.
You can obviously add them to your portfolio, but why aren't you attempting to monetize yourself? If you've got an audience on social media, you should be doing everything you can to monetize it - paid subscriptions, gated content, etc. Your readers will be happy to support you if you give them the opportunity to.
Know your audience if that’s what you are trying to do. Is your online audience your customers, or potentially something you can leverage to find clients? Those are the types of questions I’d be asking myself.
The sad truth is likes do not pay. Unless you can turn that audience into subscribers, Patreon support, or direct clients, editors will keep lowballing. Popularity has to be leveraged into leverage—otherwise it is just free marketing for them.
Make your own room with your popularity. Don't rely on traditional media to make your money if you know how to do it online!
Unfortunately in this industry I don’t think there are many opportunities that actually pay well in the scheme of things, companies don’t reflect pay on popularity of pieces
