Is being a journalist a financially stable career?

The industry is facing significant financial challenges in the current economy, which has led to layoffs and other forms of job insecurity for many journalists. I wish that things get better for us in the future!

I've been watching a mass exodus as people burn out from the awful stories, long hours, and lack of pay. Combined with the gradual closure of smaller publications....the industry is changing.

lol no, you can make a somewhat okay living off journalism but it's only if you're at the very top of the game that you can get good compensation. You need passion to pursue something like that

If you're doing journalism for the money, I'd recommend you pursue something else. The time commitment it takes to get to a "good" financial spot in this industry is way too long for what the average person can expect to get out of it

You can get enough money to pay the bills but I don't know if I'd go as far as to call it a financially stable career.

At the NY Times, yeah. At your local station in middle America, not so much.

No at all no, only if you're a top tier journalist and even then the compensation for being that good is barely comparable to other top professionals in their respective fields. It's not uncommon at all to have to supplement your income through freelancing or some other means. It can be a really fun career though if that's what you're into

Nope, that's not a profession you do for the moneys, it's only for those who love doing that kind of work. Aside from personal satisfaction, you won't get much else in the way of recognition or compensation for your hard hard work. That being said, there are some journalists who can rake it in but getting to that point takes years and years of grinding and even then it's not a guarantee that you'll find that kind of success

Traditionally, no. But I've recently seen a bit of a rise in popularity for independent journalists doing things their own way. Andrew Callaghan is probably the best example, his team is pushing the envelope when it comes to reporting and he's doing fairly well on Youtube and Patreon so I imagine he's making more than your average journalist

Depends, would you classify working for peanuts as financial stability?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the financial stability of a career in journalism depends on a variety of factors, including the specific field you choose to specialize in and the location of your job.

In general, it is safe to say that journalism is not a particularly financially stable career. Salaries for journalists are often low, and jobs are often difficult to come by.

No, journalism is not a financially stable career. It is often difficult to find steady work in this field, and salaries are often low. However, there are some opportunities for financial stability in this career, and it is possible to make a good living as a journalist.

Overall, journalism is not a particularly financially stable career. Many journalists are underpaid and freelance work can be sporadic. However, there are also many opportunities for freelance journalists to make a good living if they are successful. So it really depends on the individual journalist and their circumstances.

Yes and no. Well, mostly no. If you are great at what you do, have some big bylines and a steady job, you'll have an easier time finding work. For freelancers and people who work for local publications, the pay is usually low and job security non-existent.

… I think you do it because you want to. I still feel that way after 27 years of ups and downs and not ready to pack it in yet.

What kind of journalism?

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

So I work for a small company as a SEM/Director… which in my world just means I am really Lead Developer, Part BA and part product owner as well as reviewing the devs. I came up in this company starting at about SE3 of 5 so the position is just kind of what I made it. I have recently been getting interest from some larger companies like Amazon. Long preamble to ask, what are the day to day responsibilities/expectations of an SEM at a FAANG?

I have been overworked and overwhelmed at my current job for quite a while. This is my first position out of law school, small firm with large caseload, and in my second year of practice. I often think I should look for another opportunity elsewhere but I don't know that any other firms would give me the potential for growth and experience that I am getting here. What are other 2nd year associates doing at other firms? Trying to gauge if I really am getting more opportunities here

Journalism is the best job in the world but I feel like people are less likely to take my work seriously because I am female. So it's like they automatically think the only things I would be good at writing about are fluffy little human interest stories. I'm just a reporter like everyone else. Is there some way I can tell my supervisor that yes, I do like those stories, but I like being a serious reporter even more?
