My ultimate goal is to go in house down the road. I recently (6 months) started at a small, boutique firm handling transactions, privacy and ai work. It’s cool and I’m learning a lot (in year 2 practicing), and the money is decent (about $130k). Am I on the right path for in house, or should I look for a BL job? I have an upcoming secondment at a major tech company coming up soon as well (one of the big 5).

Transactions, Privacy and AI are areas that’ll make it easy to transition over as a privacy or commercial counsel in-house. Having a FAANG secondment will also be helpful.

I’d say this is a solid start. All relevant specialties and the secondment is good. I’d stick with it til midlevel.

We don't care what law firms you worked at. This is the exact type of experience you need. Secondments are excellent. Keep doing what you're doing.

You’re on the right track. I think the only reason to go to big law for you would be making more money immediately. But you would need to make sure you found the right group to keep getting that type of work, which is very marketable for in-house roles.

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
