Definitely make your rounds at the office. Knock on doors and introduce yourself to partners. Gently mention you’re available to help out on anything. I’m introverted so this was not my favorite thing but unfortunately a necessary evil! Prob a good time to meet other associates too

Take other associates and/or partners to lunch, ask them about what keeps them up at night, so you can find out what problems you can solve or what you can take off their plates. You’ll become a rock star, a trusted resource or perhaps both!

Agree with a lot of the suggestions made already. One other "pro tip" - monitor the daily new client matter openings. If you see a project that interests or intrigues you, reach out to the billing attorney to let them know you would love to do more work in [X] space and are available if they need any help on the matter. They may or may not have already staffed it, but at least keeps you top of mind going forward.

Finally decided to get a truck (for various reasons, I’ll spare you the details). I really like Tacomas, but I’m 6’3, 230lbs and it kind of feels too small/narrow when I’m sitting in it. Not sure I need a full size truck, although I would love one! TIA

There is a partner that, without fail, calls on Fridays after 6pm anytime I am staffed with him. It’s extremely frustrating since his calls are usually non-urgent and I make it a point to check in early in the day to address anything. Any advice?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

Do you think partners in law firms have too much power and autonomy? eg. the power to refuse leave, to do your annual appraisal, to make you work while on leave, to overwork people, to manage the team on their on terms etc. Is this power bad or good for the firm and the team overall?

Related question - Do you think the HR in law firms are just there for show since the partners have a lot of power and autonomy?
