Nobody likes feeling managed, but everyone appreciates a leader who actually sees them. In tech and data teams, the best mentorship doesn’t feel like mentorship at all; it feels like a good conversation at the right time. How do you train yourself to add value to your team without coming across as someone who just delegates and disappears?

Listen to your team. Don’t treat delegating and talking as a check box that needs to be filled. It really doesn’t take much. A little effort goes a long way with most people.

Small things count, right? Every little concern you show does help to build the character within the team!

I treat my team with respect and add value where I see I can. I am reliable and I expect my team to do the same. Role model your ideal behavior and that’s more than half the battle.

I have meetings with each of my team members every week. I think meeting with them for weekly one-on-ones helps to add value to the team and see where they are struggling.

That seems extra to me. I wouldn’t want to have 1on1s weekly with any manager. A team meeting maybe, but 1on1s I’d feel like I have to plan to have something to speak about each week in order to make my manager believe I’m working.

I focus on asking the right questions at the right time. I think guidance lands better when it feels like support, not control.

I’m in a tough spot—still waiting for conflicts to clear and out of the blue, a partner reached out regarding a project that they’ve staffed me on. They want my availability to begin working on the matter next week…how do I handle this? I haven’t given notice, but expect to do so soon…I don’t think it’s prudent to start a new matter esp. since I know I’m leaving…but I can’t turn down work with a straight face (especially because my hours are in “checked out” mode)…

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?

I have an offer to do some consulting for a company based out of the UK (I am in the US). The job would not go through a consulting company but would be directly with the company. I have not done any consulting before so I am not sure how it works, what I would need to set up (they mentioned that I would start a LLC and bill them directly, no idea how to do that), how to determine the tax implications of this, or what hourly rate I would expect. Can anyone offer advice?

With so much uncertainty in the economy and waves of layoffs that have hit tech especially hard... do we think there's really such a thing as a recession-proof job anymore if you're not an "essential worker"?
