I always tell my team to get organized and catch up on things that need to be caught up on.
Rising Star
This is the PERFECT time to get done the things that were on the back burner during the busy time
It’s a hard line to walk. The downtime is well deserved, but we also need to be getting something done. I try to address that we’ve all been incredibly busy, so it’s fine to slow down a bit, just make sure we are still getting through tasks.
My senior DM loves to tell me to tell the general managers if they aren’t staying busy they’re gonna get written up. I think when he says this, it’s very toxic.
Rising Star
👀 I don’t think that’s the right approach at all. Doesn’t create a positive environment. He can be stern and stress the requirement to be productive, but to threaten a write up is not ok
We're all taking our feet off the gas. The Christmas rush was brutal here, and everyone is completely drained. There are still things to get done, but nothing urgent, so we can get away with slowing down a bit until Valentine's Day.
Rising Star
That’s fair. We’ve all been working hard! But when I have upper mgmt breathing down my neck about labor, I have to make sure everyone is productive or someone’s gonna get cut 👀
Rising Star
Absolutely need to enjoy the downtime. Holidays is a tough period to work and everyone just needs to wind down again before they burn out.
Rising Star
Agreed! Wish upper mgmt would realize this and appreciate our hard work and not just focus on cutting labor now that we’re slow
My last job was customer service, we'd focus on merchandising, doing resets, inventory and I'd always let the team know how appreciated they are.
Rising Star
That’s a tough balance. Encouraging small goals, team challenges, or cross-training during slower periods can keep people engaged without killing the downtime vibe. Recognizing effort, even in small tasks, helps maintain motivation too.
