I have not. When people show you who they are believe them. This applies to people and companies/organizations. I have a good friend who did. She took the counter to match her offer and they still tried to short change by a few thousand. This forced them to promote her into the appropriate band. But it put her in a position where they wanted to push her out anyway at that promoted level. Yes, she made more money. Yes she was promoted. But she was forced to leave about 1.5 years later because of low key retaliation. She made her money and title but missed the opportunity to pivot into what she really wanted to do when she received the original offer...5 years later in the same line of work with no growth. When I left they sent a recruiter asking me to come back. It was flattering but they showed such dislike for me so why return to my abuser? I say this - Laser focus on your path and what you want to do. Then you will navigate with purpose...leave because of purpose rather than entertain hindrance (a counter). Counters are games. Like the cheating bf or gf who begs you to come back but don't change. In fact get worse. You know what to do.

Such a good example and story. Thank you. Will remember this and definitely very true
Had a colleague get an offer from an external company after waiting a few years for a promotion, It was a start up that honestly sounded a bit iffy but he was just over the place we worked, toxic environment and constant carrot dangling. Our department manager convinced him to stay with the offer of the promotion he wanted. The issue was, the workplace was still pretty toxic and they made him prove he could do the job with no pay increase for like 3 months. Left 2 month after the new pay kicked in.

Oh that's so interesting....good tale to remember!
I received a counter offer once and chose to leave. I didn’t like the perception that I had essentially blackmailed my former employer for a raise and knew that the negative repercussions both known and unknown by myself would likely mean I’d be right back in the same spot in the near future, except I would have burned the bridge with the employer that extended the offer.

Me too. I hate the perspective of blackmailing my former employer for more
