So BA, PO, PM do the same work but at different seniority?
That’s concerning. For me, BA is about being a subject matter expert, PO is about execution, and PM is about strategy. I’ve done all three in my career but I’m in a senior product role because I want to focus primarily on strategy and not on day to day execution.
That helps and also sounds like you are in a good organization with well defined roles and responsibilities. I have been doing all of it for last 2 years (although my roadmap planning is limited to 2 years and many of the big Boulder themes are still cxo driven). Do you mind sharing who your key stakeholders/collaborators are, when you are working through the long term strategy? Are you involved in build vs Buy decisions as well?
I agree that there are people who want to stay at one level because they love the execution part. It’s overly simplistic to talk about it as seniority level. It’s true that some people work through it like a ladder, but I think there should be titles and salary increase opportunities for those who kill it at an execution level and know they’ve found their niche.
Ah, yes, that is tough! I hear what you are saying, the leaders will make a difference. Maybe you can use a senior PM as a mentor? Or maybe another company might be a better fit. Good luck to you!
Doesn’t strategy help determine the execution approach/sequencing of effort? I enjoy both though love the storytelling aspect - providing strategic pillars so people understand the value being delivered and why the work is sequenced in that manner.
